BUTLER – Rep. Marci Mustello (R-Butler) today advocated for students and schools in Butler County to participate in her poster coloring contest in honor of Autism Awareness Month in April.

There will be nine winners across all the school districts in the 11th Legislative District. The age groups are K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 with a different poster appropriate for each age group. Students must write their name, school and grade/age on their submission. A three-judge panel will choose the winners in each age group on Monday, May 9. Mustello will present a special prize to the winners.

“I would like to see as much participation as possible while creating a fun way to bring attention to autism,” said Mustello. “It is important to highlight and celebrate all people and embrace our differences.”

Schools interested in participating should contact Mustello’s office at 724-283-5852 and indicate how many posters are needed for each age group. Mustello’s staff will deliver copies of the posters to each participating school along with the guidelines.

Autism Awareness Month aims to celebrate and promote acceptance. One in every 54 children in the United States is affected. Autism, a complex developmental condition affecting the patient’s ability to interact, communicate and progress, has many subtypes. First held in 1972 by the Autism Society, Autism Awareness Month emphasizes the need for public awareness to promote acceptance, celebrate the differences, and be more inclusive toward autistic individuals.
