Mustello Announces Local Schools to Receive Safe Schools Grants

BUTLER – Rep. Marci Mustello (R-Butler) today announced almost $65,000 in Safe School Grants have been awarded to two school districts in the 11th District by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).

“These grants would not have been possible without the bipartisan cooperation of lawmakers and the valuable input of schools, teachers, students, law enforcement and other experts in school safety,” said Mustello. “Protecting our schools is a point of emphasis for me, and I am grateful that our local schools will soon see the benefits of this grant program.”

School districts receiving funding include:

• Butler Area School District – Safe Schools Equipment Grant, $24,955.
• Slippery Rock Area School District – School Police Officer Grant, $40,000.

Safe Schools Equipment Grants assist schools in reducing unnecessary student disciplinary actions and promote a climate of greater productivity, safety and learning. In addition, the funding assists schools in procuring the resources and training necessary to create a physical environment that fosters the safety and well-being of students and staff.

Safe Schools School Police Officer Grants assist school entities in funding programs which address school violence by establishing or enhancing school security, including costs associated with the training and compensation of school police. The grant is designed to provide funds to enable the placement of school police officers into schools across the Commonwealth.

PDE’s Office for Safe Schools offers four types of safety grants: equipment grants of up to $25,000; program grants of up to $20,000; School Police Officer (SPO) grants of up to $40,000; and School Resource Officer (SRO) grants of up to $60,000.
