Legislator Issues Statement Following Gov. Shapiro’s Address
HARRISBURG – Rep. Marci Mustello (R-Butler) issued the following statement regarding Gov. Josh Shapiro’s address on his proposed $45.8 billion budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year.

“As with any budget address, this is a ‘wish list’ that starts the conversation or is a starting point that we hope will end in a fiscally responsible budget.

“While there are some positive items in this budget – such as no new tax increases, increased education funding and additional money to help our farmers -- the governor wants to spend when families cannot afford it.

“Responsible budgeting is crucial to ensuring the long-term financial health of our state, and it requires a balanced spending plan with saving and investing in the future. I have supported our Rainy Day Fund, which is now at $5 billion, to help address any future economic downturns. This budget will deplete that fund within five years.

“While it may be tempting to spend freely in the short term, failing to save and plan for the future can have serious consequences down the road.

“Effective budgeting requires tough choices and prioritizes spending. It is essential to ensure that the Commonwealth is able to provide the necessary services and support to its citizens both now and in the future.

“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I look forward to working with my colleagues and the governor to ensure that a fiscally responsible budget is passed and that it will prove beneficial to all Pennsylvanians.”
