Mustello Votes to Fix Flaws in Election Process, Supports Voting Rights Protection Bill
6/22/2021
HARRISBURG – Rep. Marci Mustello (R-Butler) voted in favor of legislation to transform and improve Pennsylvania’s election process to restore the integrity and trust for all elections. The bill today passed the House of Representatives.

House Bill 1300 addresses many of the issues brought before the State Government Committee with thoughtful and deliberate solutions,” said Mustello. “We must work together to ensure that our elections are accessible to all voters and Pennsylvania must be a leader in election security. The Voting Rights Protection Act guarantees security, accessibility, and respects the right to vote for all eligible Pennsylvanians.”

The Voting Rights Protection Act, would call for an expansion of Pennsylvania’s voter identification law; require regular election audits; improve election uniformity among the 67 counties as required by the Pennsylvania Constitution; enhance certification processes for all machines used in elections; require signature verification using ballot scanning equipment for mail-in and absentee ballots; improve lists of registered voters; conduct an audit of every election for, among other things, to improve security of elections. Specifically, registered voters would receive through their counties’ durable scannable voter registration cards, much like the identification cards currently issued to voters, to be used when voting in person.

“The Voting Rights Protection Act is the result of much input and discussion during 10 House State Government Committee hearings that sought to determine what is working in our elections, what is not working and to dispel myths and rumors while seeking facts on how our elections operate,” said Mustello. “I have heard from dozens of my constituents who are concerned about election integrity and making sure that all votes are counted. I am confident that these changes will improve our election laws and ensure that we can have a voting process that we can trust.

“It is my goal to make certain that our election process is held to the highest integrity as we move forward. And that no legal voter should ever be denied the opportunity to cast a ballot. It is our responsibility as the General Assembly to protect the right to vote and the provisions of The Voting Rights Protection Act do just that by putting the voter first.”
